Nominations open for the Celebration of African Australians NSW 2020 Awards

We are excited to announce the opening of nominations for our 2020 Awards. Established in 2014, the annual Awards appreciate and showcase the contributions of Australian residents of African descent to the state’s economic growth and prosperity.

In doing so, we identify role models who serve as mentors to young African Australians; inspire and motivate NSW African community members to utilise the vast opportunities available to them; and promote Australia as a multicultural society.

“We are excited to run our Awards program for a seventh year, and cannot wait to see the incredible line-up of nominees once again. It’s the perfect opportunity for us to acknowledge the achievements of today’s African Australian leaders and give our community members a chance to connect and collaborate with colleagues across the state,” said Ronnie Kakaire, the Celebration of African Australians NSW State Coordinator.

Since inception, the Celebration of African Australians NSW Awards have recognised the impact of over 300 individuals and organisations.

To qualify, individuals must be of African descent and partake in activities or businesses in NSW; and organisations or initiatives must be owned or operated by people of African descent. A special Friends of Africa category allows for non-African individuals, organisations and initiatives that support the African community in NSW to be recognised.

This year, we are accepting nominees in the following categories:

  • Job and industry-specific Awards: Academic Excellence; Arts and Culture; Community Engagement, Leadership and Organisation; Entrepreneurship; Professional Excellence; and Sports Excellence

  • General Awards: Friends of Africa; Humanitarian; Pan Africanist; Volunteer; and Young Talent

  • Major Awards: Champion; and Living Legend

Nominations close on Monday 31 August 2020, with winners to be announced at an Awards ceremony at the Wests Ashfield Leagues Club in Liverpool (NSW) on Saturday 5 December 2020. To nominate a deserving individual or organisation, visit our Nominations page.
